Nike Mercurial Vapor 8 Euro 2012 Edition First Thoughts

Being the next tier in the most famous speed boot line, the Vapor 8 has come under a lot of scrutiny for poor durability and a questionable design. After a few practices, here are my first thoughts on these controversial boots.

The Mercurial Vapor series has always been the lead speed boot throughout the years, only seriously contested by the Adidas Adizero. The latest boot has come under fire for its multiple durability problems and "flawed" design. The main point of scrutiny is directed towards the stud configuration, more notably the heel. Nike decided to think outside the box, and design the Vapor 8 with a two stud heel. This decision has forced many players to opt out for the SG Pro version, which features the typical four stud heel. I decided to test the FG version in order to fully experience the Vapor 8.

Two Stud Heel
To be honest and up front, I really enjoy the two stud heel. I think it's an innovative decision by Nike, and I applaud them for being creative. I experienced no discomfort or balance issues, and found that the two studs felt just as normal as four. I honestly couldn't tell that I was wearing a boot with only two heel studs. I expected it to feel similar to the Trinity; I would feel stable, but I could tell that the stud configuration was slightly different. However, I have enjoyed the two stud heel so far.

Durability
So far, the boots have held up for the most part. The white upper scuffs easily, but I can easily wash them off with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser. There is a bit of separation on the right boot (pictured below) that may grow to be a major problem, but so far I think the boot will hold up.

Upper
The upper of the Vapor 8 is by far the most soft upper I've ever experienced. The Euro 2012 edition features the leather finish, making it slightly rougher than the original release upper. It still is remarkably soft and comfortable, and I hope the same upper is featured on the Vapor 9.

Look for the review coming soon!
