First off, let me explain what this review is focused on. This review is my own personal opinion of the drink. I have saved a few drinks so some of my fellow teammates can try the drink and give me their own personal opinion. I will have a follow-up/team review of the drink sometime next month. I'm going to keep this review short and to the point.
Having never reviewed a sports drink, let me break down the criteria:
Taste: This is obviously how the drink tastes. This has nothing to do with the performance of the drink, just a first impression of how it tastes compared to drinks like Gatorade, Powerade, etc.
Performance: This is the most important aspect of the review. This category will explain how the drink performs compared to drinks like Gatorade and water.
Value: Another important category, this will review how much it costs, and whether or not the cost is worth it.
TASTE
I was somewhat skeptical going into this review on how the drink would taste. Drinks packed with nutrition tend to not be as appetizing as other drinks. This is no different with H2O Overdrive, for both drinks tended to be very bitter. The Overdrive drink was the worse of the two, smelling quite bad after opening. The smell of the drink itself was hard to bear, and the taste was no different. It tasted like vitamins, which makes sense because the drink is packed with 30 vitamins and minerals. It wasn't completely unbearable, but I had a hard time finishing it. The Hydration drink wasn't as bad as its predecessor, but it still wasn't great. I was able to drink the Hydration with no major problems, and found that it tasted better cold. I recommend that you place both drinks in a cooler/freezer before drinking. Compared to bigger drinks like Gatorade and Vitamin Water, the H2O Overdrive series stood no chance.
This is the main category of the review. I was very excited to see how the drinks would perform compared to drinks like Gatorade. After I had gotten over the taste, I was ready to put the drinks into action. First up, I will talk about the Overdrive drink.
OVERDRIVE
Like I said before, this drink tastes somewhat bad. But one look at the nutrition facts, and you can tell this drink was geared for performance. I drank a full Overdrive before workouts and games, and found that the drink really gave me a sustained boost. This boost isn't like something you would experience from an energy drink, where you are always twitching and shaking. This boost is sustained and under control. I felt like I was very aware of what was going on around me, which would help a lot in game situations. The drink seemed to last a few hours, and I felt energized the entire time. This drink is easily applied to soccer, and I found that my stamina and awareness improved whenever I had the drink. I really was pleased with how the Overdrive performed, and I would definitely recommend it to any player.
HYDRATION
This drink's impact is slightly more subtle than the Overdrive drink, and the Hydration was somewhat harder to review. Personally, I thought that the Hydration did what it was advertised to do to an extent. It was advertised to hydrate players, which I though it did. However, it is also advertised to energize players, which I thought was non-existent. I didn't feel much of an energy boost with this drink at all. The Hydration still includes the same 30 vitamins and minerals, but they seemed to be toned down compared to the Overdrive. I say this because I felt little to no affect like I had experienced with the Overdrive. Overall, I think there are better tasting products on the market that can hydrate as well as this drink did.
VALUE
Being a high end product, I was anxious to see how much the drinks retailed for, and based off that price, whether or not they were worth it. Based off of H2O Overdrives website, the drink retail for this price:
Overdrive: $3 per bottle
Hydrate: $1.66 per bottle
Based on these prices, I think that H2O Overdrive needs to reconsider their pricing. First of all, the only drink I would personally consider purchasing would be the Overdrive. But for $3 a bottle, I'm not sure if I will ever purchase the drink. Three dollars seems somewhat overkill if you ask me, and almost no player will be able to afford a $3 drink. There are a lot of other options on the market that are available for a better price. I think that if H2O Overdrive wants to solidify themselves in the market, then they must first start by lowering their prices.
Recap
H2O Overdrive is a great company with a great focus on producing drinks that will take players to the next level. I think the Overdrive is the real money maker, for I thoroughly enjoyed how it performed.
However, with the bad taste and high pricing, I think H2O Overdrive still has some work left to do. They need to price their products so everyday athletes can afford them.
